Working with Neurodivergent YouthÂ
Our strong-willed, sensitive, and intense 2e kids often cause us to stop in our “automatic pilot” tracks. In the neurotypical world, we normally tackle life's demands and challenges by becoming more focused, efficient, and productive. Much to our dismay and frustration, this approach often backfires with kids and leads to more emotional outbursts, melt downs, and power struggles, ultimately resulting in longer and more frequent delays.
Summit Center’s Dr. Loraine Van Tuyl (more info here) is a clinical psychologist and an art, sand tray, and play therapist of 2e (twice-exceptional) kids between ages 6-18 as well as a meditative guide of neurodivergent grown-ups. In this presentation, she will shed light on the inner worlds of her child clients (depicted by their sand tray creations) and why they become more cooperative, resilient, and regulated the more we slow down, become more aware and intentional, and deepen our authentic presence.

Meet and connect with other teens who understand how hard it is to be a teen these days.Â
I'm bringing together small in-person groups of girls and female-identified teens – ages 11-14 and 14-17 – at Summit Center's Walnut Creek office for genuine connection, validation, sharing, art and journaling, practical tips and guidance, self reflection, and calm centering.
Whether your teen feels left out, or unsure of themselves due to fluctuating mood swings or social pressures about how to act and who to be, this group offers a non-judgmental, safe space where true self, feelings, and individual needs are celebrated and supported. In fun and creative ways, teens will learn more about their unique strengths and how to handle the challenges they’re struggling with, including:
- Feeling misunderstood and alone, or overwhelmed in certain situations.
- Feeling different or that you don't belong (such as being neurodivergent, introverted, or sensitive).
- Unable to stop spirals of self doubt and negativity that affect your self confidence.
Skill building goals will include becoming more resilient, confident, and authentic and comfortable with themself and in all types of relationships.
Each group is limited to 5 participants, and pre-registration is required. Early bird price is $375 if you complete payment by June 21.
